The people living in Eger have a somewhat strange relationship with the Szépasszonyvölgy (Valley of Beautiful Woman). In the minds of most of us, it has always been recorded that, with few exceptions, as a tourist destination characterized by average quality wines, a homogeneous selection and mediocrity.
However, the past 2-3 years brought about a radical change. More and more wineries started to become present in the valley. Not only emerging wineries but also the best ones in town started to see potential in the place. Right in the middle of the valley there is a cultural centre (Márai Központ), where various programs are awaiting the visitors.
Let’s have a closer look what hidden gems we can find here…
Restaurants
Traditionally, there are three main restaurants in the valley: The Kulacs, The Ködmön and The Szépasszony Inn. They are especially popular among tourist groups as they are quite spacious. If you prefer smaller places, we can recommend the Édeskert or Butykos restaurant, where the owner himself gets creative in the kitchen. Az utóbbiban a tulaj szokott a konyhában szorgoskodni, ez számomra mindig plusz pont.
For food enthusiasts, I recommend Wanda Borház (Wanda Wine House). Here, food is only available upon prior reservation. The owner and gastronomy fanatic, Attila Kerenszky, creates truly exceptional dishes. So far, I have never had an average meal there. ☺
Wineries
I would start with Ostorosbor Bor(z) Bar. The name itself suggests that there is creativity at this place. You can indulge in a stable selection of good quality and reasonably priced wines from Ostoros. In my opinion, their rosé wines are traditionally very good, but you won’t be disappointed with their other wines either.
Demeter borbár 44
Demeter Csabi is a cool winemaker. We love his wine, and his wine bar has a great atmosphere. In our humble opinion, he excels in white wines. You can’t go wrong with his wines. What’s unique about him is that Csabi doesn’t turn down a good beer. The advantage is that you can enjoy freshly tapped beers at his place.
St Andrea – Kedves Wine bisztró
This is already top-notch. The presence of this renowned Eger winery certainly elevates the image of Szépasszonyvölgy. They offer serious wines in an exclusive setting. Of course, it should be mentioned that the prices are in the premium category.
Wanda borház
A craft winery where you can discover beautiful wines. The top-quality wines here are not cheap, but it’s worth giving them a try, and I think the place itself has a charming atmosphere. In addition to their Pinot Noir wine, it’s worth mentioning their delicious coffee as well.
Petrény bor – Völgy 47
They have won several prestigious awards at the famous Bordeaux Challenge International du Vin wine competition, bringing recognition to the wine region. I believe it’s worth exploring their red wines and experiencing their flavors.
In addition to these, there are many other great little cellars to be found in the valley.
In essence, due to the changes in recent years, the perception of Szépasszonyvölgy has also changed among the locals. It has become a place where visitors can get a good cross-section of the repertoire of the Eger wine region. From affordable wines to top-quality ones, everyone can choose and taste to their liking here. And we, the people of Eger, are also increasingly drawn to one of the charming cellars.
